Tumble Dryer Buying Guide – Ask the Right Questions at Beattys

Tumble Dryer Buying Guide – Ask the Right Questions at Beattys - Beattys of Loughrea

If you're buying a tumble dryer in 2025, you're likely trying to balance space, cost, running efficiency and features. Whether you're replacing a broken machine or upgrading to something better, this guide will steer you in the right direction.

At Beattys, we stock reliable, trusted models from brands that perform well in Irish homes—Blomberg, Electrolux, and Beko are our top picks. We're also seeing great things from Hisense, a newer brand that’s quickly earning a name for energy-efficient appliances with useful features at competitive prices.

Choosing the Right Type of Dryer

There are three main types of tumble dryers. The right choice depends on your budget, space, and energy priorities:

Vented Dryers Lower upfront cost, but they need to be placed near an external wall to run a vent hose. Simple and effective.

Condenser Dryers These collect moisture in a tank you empty regularly. Easy to install anywhere with a plug, no need for a vent.

Heat Pump Dryers The most energy efficient. They use lower drying temperatures and recycle hot air, making them more cost-effective in the long run. Ideal if you dry clothes often.

⚠️ Important Update for 2025 Buyers

Yes, the sale of vented tumble dryers in Ireland, along with condenser dryers, is being phased out due to new EU regulations requiring the use of heat pump technology for tumble dryers. These regulations, which took effect on 1 July 2025, aim to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Ecodesign Regulation:
The EU introduced the Ecodesign Regulation (EU 2023/2533) on 17 November 2023, setting new minimum standards for tumble dryers sold in the EU.

  • Focus on Heat Pump Technology:
From July 2025, only tumble dryers using heat pump technology can be placed on the EU market.

  • Vented and Condenser Dryers Phased Out:
These older models don’t meet the new requirements and will no longer be allowed for sale.

  • Energy Label Updates:
Energy labels will also shift from the A+++ to D scale to a simpler A to G scale, making comparisons easier.

  • What It Means for You:
As an Irish retailer, Beattys complies with EU rules. From July 2025, only heat pump tumble dryers will be available in-store and online.

Energy Efficiency and Running Costs

Appliances now come with energy ratings from A+++ to D. Heat pump dryers typically sit in the A++ or A+++ range and use about half the electricity of older condenser or vented models.

While they cost more to buy, many households will make that money back within a few years. Running a heat pump dryer costs around €0.25–€0.35 per cycle, depending on your tariff. Compare that to €0.60+ for older, less efficient machines and the savings stack up.

Capacity and Performance

Match the drum size to your household:

  • 7–8kg: Ideal for singles, couples, or smaller families
  • 9kg+: Better for families of 4 or more, or anyone doing heavy loads like bedding and towels

Look for sensor drying if you want to avoid over-drying and wasting energy. It adjusts the cycle based on how wet your clothes are. Useful features include:

  • Delicate programmes for wool and synthetics
  • Quick dry settings for small loads
  • Reverse drum action to reduce tangling

Installation and Space

Before choosing, measure your laundry area and check:

  • Will the dryer fit in the space?
  • Does it need external venting?
  • Do you want to stack it on a washing machine? If so, make sure both machines are compatible and stable.

Slimline and compact models are also available if you’re tight on space.

Features That Actually Matter

Many models now come with extra functions, but focus on what you'll use:

  • Anti-crease or steam refresh: Helps reduce ironing
  • Quiet operation mode: Handy for open-plan homes or night-time use
  • Smart app control: Useful if you like remote notifications or want to monitor energy use
  • Interior drum light: Makes it easier to see small items

Noise Levels

If your dryer is going in a kitchen or utility off a living area, noise matters. Most tumble dryers run between 64–67dB, which is like background conversation. Models with “quiet” or “silent” cycles are worth considering if it’s a shared space.

Warranties and After-Sales Support

All dryers sold at Beattys come with a 2-year warranty, and some brands like Blomberg offer 3 years when you register. An extended cover is available if you want to add peace of mind.
