Airrex AH-500i Blue Flame WiFi Diesel Infrared Heater
A workshop in January is a miserable place to work, and most of the ways of heating one are worse than the cold — a roaring fan heater that costs a fortune and blows dust over everything you are trying to paint, or a gas bottle that runs out halfway through the job. The Airrex AH-500i is a different proposition: a diesel-fired infrared heater with no fan at all.
Infrared heats objects rather than air. The bench, the floor, the engine block and the person standing beside it get warm directly, so the heat does not vanish the moment someone opens the roller door. Because there is no fan, nothing is blown about — which is why these are used in spray shops, joinery workshops and marquees where moving dust is the last thing you want. At 47 dB it is quieter than a conversation; you can hold one beside it.
This is the Blue Flame generation, which Airrex say burns more cleanly and more hotly than their earlier models. It runs at 11kW or 15kW — you choose, rather than having one setting and a thermostat fighting it — and will heat a space of up to 1,500 cubic metres. The 45 litre tank gives roughly a day and a half of continuous running before it needs filling, and a battery-powered transfer pump comes in the box for that job.
It is controlled from a soft-touch panel with an LED screen, an infrared remote, or your phone over WiFi — so you can put the heat on in the workshop before you leave the house. On a site with no WiFi, a 4G dongle is available separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it indoors?
Airrex design these for ventilated indoor spaces — workshops, warehouses, garages and the like. They specify that an exhaust pipe to the outside is needed only when the heater is used in an enclosed area, or anywhere people sleep. Follow the installation and ventilation instructions supplied with the heater.
What fuel does it take, and how long does a tank last?
Diesel, red diesel or biodiesel. It is not suitable for waste oil. The tank holds 45 litres and it burns 1.05 to 1.42 litres an hour depending on whether you run it at 11kW or 15kW, which works out at roughly 32 to 42 hours of continuous heating per fill. Below 10°C you want winter-grade fuel.
Why infrared rather than a fan heater?
A fan heater warms the air, which escapes the moment a door opens, and it blows dust around. Infrared warms the surfaces and the people instead. It also means no fan noise — this runs at 47 dB.
What does the WiFi actually do?
It lets you control the heater from an app on your phone, so you can start it before you get to the workshop and check on it without walking out. Where there is no WiFi, a 4G dongle is available separately.
How does it compare with the other Airrex heaters?
The AH-500i sits in the middle of the range. The AH-200i is 13kW for spaces to 900m³, the AH-300i is 15kW to 1,500m³, and the AH-800i is 22kW to 2,000m³. The AH-500i is the one with the Blue Flame burner and the choice of two output levels.
What is the warranty?
Five years, provided you register the heater. Register it when you buy it rather than when something goes wrong.

If your goods are damaged or faulty, we will replace the goods free of charge. If you do not want a replacement, delivery charges may be incurred to collect the item from you. Do not install any damaged items. This counts as acceptance of goods and the item is then non-returnable and non-refundable. Damaged goods must be reported within 48 hours of delivery, please contact us by emailing websales@beattys.ie or by phone on (091) 841403. In the event that goods are received in a damaged state please retain the product together with any packaging and contact us within 48 hours of receipt with photographic evidence. In the case of an item being faulty we may require an inspection by a manufacturer's qualified engineer to be carried out on the item in the location where it is installed. This is so the nature of the fault can be ascertained before we can arrange for a replacement.
All products leave our premises in perfect condition. The customer must notify the carrier (or postman) of even the slightest trace of damage (holes, signs of crushing, etc.) to the parcel, and refuse the package if necessary.
