TP-Link TL-WA850RE 300Mbps Wall-Plug Wi-Fi Range Extender
The problem it solves is the back bedroom, the converted attic or the garage where the broadband signal gives up. This plugs straight into a socket — no cables, no power brick, no shelf space — picks up your existing Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts it further into the house.
The clever part is the five signal lights on the front. They show how strong the link back to your router is, so you can move it from socket to socket until you find the spot that works. TP-Link's advice is to settle where at least three lights are on. Without that, positioning an extender is guesswork.
Setting it up takes a WPS press: press WPS on the router, then the button on the extender within two minutes, and it copies your network details across. If your router has no WPS button, the TP-Link Tether app walks through it instead.
There is also a 10/100 ethernet port, which is more useful than it looks. Anything with a network socket and no Wi-Fi — an older smart TV, a games console, a printer — plugs into the extender and joins the wireless network through it.
It works on the 2.4GHz band at up to 300Mbps, and draws about 3W. The app can put the lights into night mode so it is not glowing on a landing at 3am.

How do I set it up?
