HoMedics TotalClean 5-in-1 Tower Air Purifier with UV-C, Medium
If there's someone in the house with hay fever, asthma or a dust allergy — or a dog that sheds through the whole of spring — this is the quiet machine in the corner that takes it out of the air. Air is drawn in through a pre-filter for the big stuff, then a True HEPA filter for the fine particles, then activated carbon for the smells, with UV-C and a switchable ioniser doing their bit on the way through.
HoMedics rate it two ways, and it's worth knowing both: up to 84m² at one air change an hour, or 17.2m² at 4.8 air changes an hour. It's the same 204.1m³/h of airflow either way — so for a bedroom or a sitting room you're getting the air turned over properly rather than just stirred.
There are three fan speeds, a timer you can set to 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours, and a nightlight that'll switch the display off altogether so it isn't lighting up the room at 3am. There's an oil tray on it too, if you want a bit of scent with it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size room will it handle?
HoMedics give it two ways. Up to 84m² if you only want one air change an hour, or 17.2m² if you want 4.8 changes an hour. It's the same 204.1m³/h of airflow — for allergies, the second figure is the one to go by, so think a bedroom or an average sitting room rather than a whole open-plan floor.
How often does the filter need changing?
There's a filter in it when it arrives, and it's a yearly job after that under normal use — an indicator light tells you when. The replacement is part AP-T30FL. Vacuum the pre-filter on the outside of it once a month in between and it'll see the year out properly.
Can I wash the filter instead of replacing it?
No — never wash a True HEPA filter or put any cleaner near it, as it ruins the media. The pre-filter on the outside is the part you vacuum.
Will it keep us awake?
It's built to run overnight. The nightlight has three settings and one of them turns the display lights off completely, so there's nothing glowing at you, and the lowest of the three fan speeds is the one for sleeping.
What's the UV-C for, and does it need replacing?
It works on germs and bacteria as the air passes through, and you can switch it off if you'd rather. The bulb runs about 10,000 hours and the button flashes red when it's due. If it ever goes, the purifier keeps running without it.
