Shallow and wide is the shape that suits braising best — everything sits in one layer, browns properly, and cooks at the same rate. This 30cm enamelled cast iron shallow casserole holds 3.7 litres and comes with its own heavy cast iron lid, so a dish can be browned on the hob, covered, and left to the oven to finish.
It has two cast iron side handles rather than a long one, which keeps the whole thing compact enough to sit comfortably on an oven shelf and makes it easy to lift with both hands. The black porcelain enamel interior is built for the higher surface temperatures that searing calls for, and there is no seasoning to keep up with. The deep blue enamelled exterior means it goes straight from the oven to the middle of the table.
Suits every hob including induction and oven safe to 230°C.

Can it go in the dishwasher?
No — hand wash only. Let it cool down gradually first, then wash with a soft sponge and mild soap. Never use abrasive cleaners or scourers on the enamel, and dry it thoroughly afterwards.
Will it work on an induction hob?
Yes. It is cast iron underneath the enamel, so it is compatible with all hob types including induction, as well as gas, electric, ceramic and halogen.
Can it go in the oven?
Yes, up to 230°C (450°F). The lid has a stainless steel knob, so the whole thing — pan and lid together — is rated to that temperature. Always use oven gloves: the handles get every bit as hot as the pan.
Does it need seasoning like bare cast iron?
No. The interior is sealed with porcelain enamel, so there is nothing to season and nothing to re-oil. Use silicone, nylon or wooden utensils though — metal tools will chip the enamel.
