Why Choose a DJI Drone?

DJI leads the drone industry with cutting-edge technology, offering exceptional flight stability, intelligent navigation, and high-resolution cameras. Our range includes models for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced pilots.

Features of DJI Drones

  • 4K & HD Cameras – Capture crystal-clear images and professional-grade video.

  • Intelligent Flight Modes – Automated tracking, obstacle avoidance, and stable hovering.

  • Long Battery Life – Extended flight time for uninterrupted shooting.

📜 The "Legal Bits": Licenses & Registration

Do I need a license?

Technically, you need a Drone Operator ID and a Remote Pilot Competency certificate if your drone has a camera or weighs over 250g.

  •  Registration: You must register as an "Operator" on the IAA MySRS portal. It costs around €30 and lasts for two years.

  • Training: For most popular drones (like the DJI Mini series), you only need to complete a simple online safety course and quiz on the IAA website.

Do drones need insurance?

For recreational (fun) use, insurance is not legally required for drones under 20kg. However, the IAA strongly recommends it. If you crash into a car or—heaven forbid—a person, you are personally liable for damages.

🚁 Buying Guide: Best Drones & Costs

What is the best drone to buy?

The "sweet spot" for most people is the C0 Category (drones under 240g). Because they are light, they have the fewest restrictions.

  • Best Overall: DJI Mini 4 Pro or the newer DJI Mini 5 Pro. They offer pro-level 4K video but are small enough to fly almost anywhere legally.

  • Best Budget: DJI Neo or Potensic Atom. These are great for beginners and very portable.

  • Best for Pros: DJI Mavic 4 Pro. It’s more powerful and stable in Irish wind but comes with more strict distance rules from people.

How much does a good drone cost?

  • Starter/Budget: €160 – €350 (e.g., DJI Neo, Potensic).

  • Mid-Range (The Standard): €450 – €900 (e.g., DJI Mini 4/5 series).

  • High-End/Pro: €1,200 – €2,000+ (e.g., DJI Mavic series).

📍 Where Can You Fly?

Location Can I fly? Rules/Notes
My Property Yes You must still stay below 120m (400ft) and respect neighbors' privacy.
Residential Areas Yes* Only if using a C0 drone (<250g). Heavier drones must stay 150m away from residential areas.
Cliffs of Moher No It is a No Fly Zone (Special Protected Area) to protect nesting birds and for safety.
Countryside Yes Generally safe, but you must have the landowner's permission to take off and land.
National Parks Mostly No Most Irish National Parks (like Killarney) prohibit drones to protect wildlife.

Are DJI drones getting banned? There is no ban on DJI drones in Ireland or the EU. While there has been political discussion in the US, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) continues to recognize DJI drones as safe and legal, provided they have the proper CE/C-class marking.

⚠️ Key Safety Rules

  • Height Limit: Never fly higher than 120m (400ft).

  • Line of Sight: You must always be able to see the drone with your own eyes (no "flying by screen" only).

  • Airports: Stay at least 5km away from any airport or airfield.

  • Privacy: It is illegal to record people without their consent where they have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" (like through a neighbor's window).

Drone Training School in Ireland if you're looking for a professional certificate?

In Ireland, professional drone training is handled by Recognised Training Entities (RTEs) approved by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). While many courses have moved online, many schools still offer hands-on practical flight training at specific locations.

Here are the top-rated drone training schools in Ireland categorized by their main hubs:

🏛️ Top Training Schools (IAA Approved)

School Name Location Specialization Approx. Cost
Avtrain Dublin 8 (Guinness Enterprise Centre) Professional Certification & EASA A2/STS €149 (A2) - €1,200+
Safe Drone Academy Dublin 15 (Clonsilla) "Specific Category" (STS) & Professional Pilot €1350 (Full STS)
FlyRyte Drone Academy Dublin / Nationwide Military & Civilian grade training Varies by category
Survey Drones Ireland Dublin Mapping, Construction & Surveying €150+
Munster Drone Services Cork (Millstreet) DJI-specific training & Hands-on flying ~€200
TUS (Technological University) Limerick / Midwest Level 7 Academic Certificate in Drones ~€1,250

📍 Where to find them by Region

  • Dublin & Kildare: This is the main hub for drone education. Safe Drone (Clonsilla), Avtrain (Dublin City), and UspaceAero (Dublin Airport) are the leaders here. For hands-on flying, many use Weston Airport (Leixlip) for training sessions.

  • Cork & Munster: Munster Drone Services in Millstreet is excellent for beginners who want to learn how to fly their specific DJI model safely.

  • Limerick & West: TUS (formerly LIT) offers a 16-week professional course for those looking to make a career out of drone operations (Surveys, Engineering, etc.).

  • Galway: Galway Flying Club (Carnmore) often facilitates aviation-related training, though specialized drone RTEs like Avtrain often run "pop-up" practical days in the west.

🎓 Which course do you actually need?

  1. Open A2 Certificate: This is the most popular. It allows you to fly "close to people" (up to 30m) with slightly heavier drones. It usually costs around €149 and can be done mostly online with a proctored exam.

  2. Specific Category (STS/PDRA): This is for professionals who need to fly over crowds, in cities, or "beyond visual line of sight" (BVLOS). This costs €1,000–€1,500 and includes a full practical flight test.

  3. 1-to-1 Flight Training: If you are just nervous about crashing your new €1,000 drone, companies like Drone Works Ireland offer 1-on-1 practical sessions for about €150.
