A slate ripper takes a single slate off a roof without disturbing the ones around it. The thin blade slides up underneath the slate, hooks the nails that are holding it, and a few hammer blows on the cranked handle shear or draw those nails so the slate comes away. It is how a roofer replaces one cracked slate instead of stripping a whole course.
This one is made from one piece of solid forged steel. Blade, shaft and handle are the same bar of metal — there is no weld or rivet joining a blade to a separate shaft, which is exactly where a two-part ripper gives up once you start hitting it. At 630mm (25in) overall it has the reach to get well up under a slate, and the cranked handle carries a flat striking face so you can drive it with a hammer rather than pulling by hand.
Finished in a black anti-rust coating.

What does a slate ripper actually do?
It removes a slate that is still nailed in place. The blade goes up under the slate, hooks the nail, and the nail is sheared or drawn by striking the cranked handle with a hammer. The slate then slides out and the slates either side are left undisturbed.
What does "one-piece forged" mean, and why does it matter?
The whole tool — blade, shaft and handle — is forged from a single bar of steel. Cheaper rippers are made in two parts with the blade welded or riveted on, and that joint is the first thing to break when the tool is being hammered. There is no joint here to break.
Can I hit it with a hammer?
Yes. The handle is cranked and has a flat striking face for exactly that. Striking the handle is the normal way to drive the blade through a nail.
Do I need to lift the slates above it?
No. The tool is designed to work from below with the slate still in position, which is the whole point of it.
