Irwin Vise-Grip Adjustable Wrench, 150mm (6in)
The small adjustable — the one that lives in the kitchen drawer, the bike bag or the top tray of the toolbox and turns whatever is in front of it. 150mm long with a 25mm jaw capacity, which covers tap connectors, compression fittings, small nuts and most of what goes wrong around a house.
The jaws are parallel and smooth faced, so they sit flat on the flats of a nut and are far less likely to scratch a chrome fitting than a serrated jaw. There is a metric and imperial scale on the jaw, so you can read off the size you have just set — useful for going to find the right spanner. The pull-opening mechanism adjusts quickly and finely, and the body is chrome vanadium steel.
The same wrench is also made in 300mm (12in) for bigger fittings.

How wide do the jaws open?
Up to 25mm.
Will it mark a chrome tap fitting?
The jaws are smooth faced rather than serrated, so it is much kinder than a pipe wrench. On a polished finish, a cloth between jaw and fitting is still worth the ten seconds.
What is the scale on the jaw for?
It reads the jaw opening in millimetres and inches, so once you have it snug on a nut you can read the size off and go and fetch the proper spanner.
Should I get this or the 300mm?
The 150mm opens to 25mm and suits small fittings and confined work. The 300mm opens to 38mm and handles bigger plumbing and machinery nuts. If you only buy one for the house, the 150mm is the more useful.
