The DCD996 is DeWalt's heavy end of the 18V combi drill range, and this kit pairs it with their biggest battery. 95Nm of torque across 11 clutch settings, a three-speed all-metal transmission (0–450, 0–1,300 and 0–2,000/min), and hammer rates up to 38,250bpm.
Capacity is 16mm in masonry, 15mm in steel and 55mm in wood, through a 13mm ratcheting keyless chuck with automatic spindle lock. The improved automatic high speed steps the drill up when it is working masonry, so you are not fighting the trigger.
There is a 3-position LED torch — high, medium, low — with a 20 minute delay on the high setting, which is more useful than it sounds in a dark loft or under a sink. Tool weight 2.1kg.
Supplied with a 18/54V 9.0/3.0Ah XR FlexVolt battery, a DCB118 fast charger and a TSTAK heavy-duty kit box. The FlexVolt pack is the convertible one: it runs this 18V drill at 9.0Ah, and converts to 54V/3.0Ah for FlexVolt tools — so the same battery works across both platforms.

What is in the box?

Why does the battery have two ratings?
FlexVolt packs convert. In an 18V tool like this drill the pack is 9.0Ah; drop it into a 54V FlexVolt tool and it becomes 54V at 3.0Ah. One battery, both platforms.
Will it drill masonry, or do I need an SDS?
It takes 16mm in masonry on hammer, which covers most fixings into block and brick. For repeated drilling into concrete, or anything bigger, an SDS is the right tool.
What is the automatic high speed?
The drill steps its speed up by itself when it senses it is drilling masonry, rather than making you change gear or hold the trigger differently.
How is this different from the DCD996P2?
Same drill, different kit. The P2 comes with two 5.0Ah 18V batteries; this X1 comes with one 9.0Ah FlexVolt battery that also works in 54V tools.
