Amtech 3-in-1 Stud, Metal & Live Wire Detector
The drill goes in, and then you find out what was behind the plasterboard. This little Amtech detector is the five-minute job that stops that happening — run it across the wall first and it will tell you where the timber studs, the hidden metal and, most importantly, the live AC cables are.
Three modes on one toggle switch, with both an audible beep and a visual indicator so you don't have to keep your eye on the unit while you're working at arm's length. The body is flat-backed to sit flush against the wall as you sweep, and it runs off a 9V PP3 battery, which is supplied in the pack — so it's ready to use the moment you open it.
It's the sort of tool that lives in the drawer and earns its place twice a year: hanging a heavy mirror, putting up shelves, fitting a TV bracket, or working out where the noggins are before you start.

Does it come with a battery?
Yes — a 9V PP3 battery is supplied with the detector, so there's nothing else to buy before you can use it.
Will it work on a solid block or brick wall?
The stud mode is designed for timber framing behind plasterboard, so it's at its most useful on stud walls and dry-lined walls. The metal and live-cable modes are still worth running over a plastered solid wall before you drill.
Is it safe to rely on it around electrics?
Use it as a first check, not the only one. No consumer detector is infallible, so isolate the circuit at the board if you're drilling anywhere near a known cable run, and get an electrician in if you're unsure.
What do the three modes actually find?
Stud mode locates timber framing behind plasterboard, metal mode picks up hidden metal, and the live AC mode flags mains cables. You change between them on a single toggle switch, and each one alerts you with both a beep and a visual indicator.
