Fibreglass does not kink, does not rust, and will not cut your hand when it snakes back across the ground. The blade is 13mm wide and marked in metric and imperial on the same face, so you read both off one side without flipping the tape over.

Open frame means exactly what it says: the reel is an open ABS cross rather than a sealed case. Two things follow from that. The blade rewinds faster, because the 4:1 geared handle is driving an open reel with nothing to drag against; and when the tape comes back in off wet ground you can get at it to wipe the mud off, instead of winding dirt into a closed case where it stays.

Set up for one person: a metal end hook at the far end and an integral ground spike you push into the ground and hook the frame over, so you can walk the tape out and read it on your own. The rewind handle folds away flat against the frame when you are carrying it.
